There was a place sinners could flee. And no one was able to catch the sinners who fled there. It’s hard to understand in common sense manner, but such a place actually existed.

The city of refuge. A person who killed someone accidentally could flee to the city of refuge. The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming and is not the realities themselves (Hebrews 10:1.) From the following short YouTube video, you can understand the mystery hidden in the law of the city of refuge established about 3,500 years ago.

The law of the Old Testament about the city of refuge is a prophecy that teaches us where our souls come from and where we go, and how we can return to our former home.

Sinners who killed someone accidentally could flee to the city of refuge, but the murderers who deliberately killed someone could not (Numbers chapter 35.) Intentional murderers were put to death even if they fled to the city of refuge for their lives (Numbers 35:16-21.)

Accidental murderers, who fled to the city of refuge, could return their homes only after the death of the high priest of the city (Numbers 35:26-28.)

Then, what’s the secret hidden in the law of the Old Testament about the city of refuge?

The characteristics of the law about the city of refuge:

  1. Only accidental murderers could flee to the city of refuge for their lives;
  2. Sinners, who fled to the city of refuge, left their homes;
  3. There was a high priest who was anointed with the holy oil in the city of refuge;
  4. Sinners in the city of refuge could return their homes only after the death of the high priest.

The law about the city of refuge is a shadow of the good things to come (Hebrews 10:1), or a prophecy. First, let’s find out the reality of the anointed high priest of the city of refuge.

Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy. (Daniel 9:24)

The prophet Daniel wrote that the most high would be anointed. And it’s written that then, transgression and sin would end. Who did fulfill this prophecy? Jesus did. Therefore, Jesus is the reality of the high priest who was anointed in the city of refuge. Let’s confirm if really Jesus came as the high priest in the New Testament.

Although he [Jesus] was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek. (Hebrews 5:8-10)

According to the prophecy of the Bible, we can understand that Jesus came as the high priest who is anointed.

Where did the high priest who was anointed stay in the law of the Old Testament? The high priest stayed in the city of refuge. So the earth where we live is the spiritual city of refuge.

Who did flee to the city of refuge in the Old Testament times? Sinners, who killed someone accidentally, could flee there. Since the earth is the spiritual city of refuge, the people on the earth are spiritual sinners who committed grave sins. Just as sinners in the city of refuge left their homes, all people on the earth are aliens and strangers (Hebrews 11:13.)

Then, how can we return to our former home? The law about the city of refuge teaches us that we can return to the kingdom of heaven only after the death of the high priest, or Christ.

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace (Ephesians 1:7)

Jesus came to the earth to free us and lead us to the kingdom of heaven.  How can we have the forgiveness of sins through the blood of Christ? Jesus allowed us the forgiveness of sins through the Passover.

This [Passover wine] is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (Matthew 26:28)

Jesus came as the high priest in the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 5:8-10.) Melchizedek blessed Abraham with the bread and wine (Genesis 14:17-20), and Jesus, the reality of Melchizedek, also blessed the people of God with the Passover bread and wine 2,000 years ago. In this age, Christ Ahnsahnghong brought us the Passover of the New Covenant, which had been abolished by Satan and disappeared for a long time, for the forgiveness of sins. (For more about Melchizedek, please refer to this page.) To return to our former home or the kingdom of heaven, we must believe in Christ Ahnsahnghong who came to the earth according to the prophecies of the Bible in this age.
